Small Steps, Small Choices
When I’m facing new or stressful situations, I want to be a person that responds in a healthy way. I react without thinking way too often, especially when things feel unfair or busy. When I’m in a heated moment, my thoughts swirl like a tornado and it’s hard to exit the cyclone of chaos. Then I read the Bible and I learn that God directs us to do the exact opposite of what our human nature wants us to do. Like when he says to wait when all we want to do is take action or to hope when all else feels lost.
"Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation,be constant in prayer."
Romans 12:12
It is by no means easy, but I’m thankful for the Holy Spirit and his creativity. When we ask him to help, he shows us ways to realign our thinking with God’s. We do this through small steps and small choices. Our small and simple movements towards truth matter just much as the big ones.
The following statements illustrate what I mean. These are practical steps you can take when you’re having a hard time hearing truth or seeing clearly. Whatever you’re facing right now, may these help you reset and reconnect with God’s love.
If you’re feeling unmotivated, set a timer and work in small increments e.g. 10, 20, 30 minutes.
If you’re feeling anxious, move slow.
If you’re feeling, anger or rage, breathe in for 5 seconds, breathe out for 5 seconds.
If you’re feeling confused, list your questions with a pen and paper.
If you’re feeling busy, take a walk.
If you’re feeling dismissed, ask God, “How do you notice me?” (Read Luke 1:48)
If you’re feeling shame, take communion.
If you’re feeling faithless, raise your hands and worship.
