The last installment of our Teacher Feature series, but certainly not the least -- It's time to give a warm social media welcome to our founder, Mary! 🫶 Mary not only opened Trinity Performing Arts Studio and runs daily operations, she teaches too! Mary teaches a variety of classes such as ballet to our primary program ages 5-7, tap, jazz, contemporary, and hip-hop. Q: What led you you open the studio? A: It was the voice of God that called me to open the studio. He showed me it was time. I wanted to use the gifts God has given me to make a meaningful impact and transform lives. Q: What do you love about dancing? A: Dance has a unique ability to unite people, whether at a wedding, party, church, school, social gathering, or studio. It provides a powerful outlet for self-expression while fostering connection and community. Q: What challenges have you faced when it comes to owning a studio and teaching? A: Some of the challenges have to do with work-life-family life. It can be difficult at times, especially when work follows me home, but I’m focused on finding a healthy balance. Q: What encouragement do you have for others when it comes to dance? A: When it comes to dance, focus on showcasing your unique self. Don’t strive to imitate others—let your individuality shine and always give your very best. Q: What's something you like to do in your free time?  A: I cherish spending time with my family and relaxing on the couch. I enjoy a bowl of homemade stovetop popcorn and watching a good movie! Q: What would you tell yourself as a little girl to inspire or remind her of hope?  A: You are beautiful, and true beauty isn’t defined by society—it comes from being created in God’s image. Hey hey! Welcome back to Teacher Feature! A series where we introduce the fabulous humans who teach our classes and choreograph a lot of our dances. Meet Talmadge! Talmadge teaches Ballet 1, Ballet 2, Pre-pointe/pointe, Junior Lyrical & Jazz, and private lessons. Q: What inspires you? A: Many of the teaching techniques and studio atmospheres I grew up with were, by today’s standards, abusive and toxic. So I’m inspired to teach because it gives me an opportunity to break old-fashioned beliefs that often focus on body shape + size, demeaning students, and demanding physical corrections. I'm here to change the game and offer a positive influence that encourages worth and value. Q: What challenges have you faced that have influenced the way you teach? A: The challenges that life has thrown at me have made me more resilient and pushed me out of my comfort zone. Ultimately, I'm a stronger person. I hope I can use those lessons to help my dancers learn the importance of determination, resiliency, and that things don’t always go as planned…and that’s ok! Q: What's one fact we should know about you? A: I went back to college in my 40’s and earned a Master of Fine Art degree in visual studies with concentrations in photography and feminist art history. Welcome back to our series we like to call "Teacher Feature". This is where we share a little bit more about the people who lead our classes. It's time to meet Red! Red teaches tumbling and tap classes. Q: When did you start dancing? A: I started dancing 9 years ago but had been doing gymnastics for several years prior. Q: What is your favorite genre of dance. A: Tap! It comes the most naturally to me! Q: What do you like to do in your free time? A: In my free time I’m usually making jewelry for the store I sell at, going out with friends, singing, or choreographing for the school shows I work on. I also frequent the theater, which is something my sister and I have done together for years. I am currently pursuing a degree in theatre arts! Q: What is one thing you can't live without? A: Definitely musicals! At any opportunity, I have a musical album or playlist on in the background, and I’m always humming or dancing along any chance I get. Some of my favorites include Newsies, West Side Story, Joseph, and Cabaret. Q: What inspires you? A: I am most inspired by other performers. Whether it be the kids I’m teaching or the performers in a professional production I’m watching. I love it when people’s personalities shine through while they’re performing. This is why I always knew I wanted a career in the theatre industry, and I’ve always enjoyed working with kids. I love performing onstage and leading others to gain confidence through performance. Red! You bring so much playfulness and creativity to our studio! Our students can learn so much from your passion for the arts.
